5 Nonnewaug Athletes Take Home Berkshire League Titles

LITCHFIELD – 5 athletes from Nonnewaug High School had first-place finishes in the 2019 Berkshire League boys and girls track and field championships, which were held Saturday at Litchfield High School. Overall, Nonnewaug finished second in the girls meet and the boys were fourth in the boys meet.

Senior Azria Malloy paced the girls team with two first place finishes and two second place finishes. Malloy won the 100-meter hurdles and javelin and was second in the 200-meter dash and shot put.

Senior Eddie Nicholas breezed to a victory in the boys 3,200 with a time of 9:44.45. Courtney Rowland won the girls high jump with a leap of 5-feet, 3-inches. Samantha Thompson won the girls pole vault with a height of 9 feet.

Other athletes who scored for Nonnewaug include:

The girls 4X800 team of Carly Andrew, Helene Berger, Maddie Woodward, and Grace Koukopoulous finished second with a time of 10:38.92;

The boys 4X100 team of Scherf, Bauer, Pedro Prates, and Christo Jamo finished 6th with a 49.5 second run;

Greg Bastek in the boys 1,600 (6th place, 5:05.39) and Woodward (5th, 5:47.35) and Koukopoulous (7th, 5:51.81) in the girls 1,600;

Ryan Montiero in the boys 110 hurdles (2nd, 15.93) and Cassandra Barbino (3rd, 17.78) and Samantha Thompson (4th, 17.92) in the girls 110 hurdles;

Barbino (4th, 52.12) and Sammy Faull (6th, 53.24) in the girls 300 hurdles;

Bastek in the boys 800 (5th, 2:13.13) and Woodward (4th, 2:32.74) and Berger (7th, 2:40.88) in the girls 800; Berger (5th, 13:13.33) and Woodward (8th, 13:24.82) in the girls 3,200;

Nicholas, Bastek, Austin Grant, and David DeForge in the 4X400 (7th, 4:04.9) and Koukopoulous, Nora Buckley, Jade Fortin, and Lizzie King in the girls 4X400 (8th, 4:57.77);

Savanah Fish (4th, 92-02 feet) in the girls javelin and Bauer (7th, 128-08) in the boys javelin;

Monteiro (7th, 36-08.5) and Jamo (8th, 36-08) in the boys triple jump and Thompson (4th, 32-02) in the girls triple jump;

Rowland (3rd, 14-05) and Thompson (13-10.5) in the girls long jump and Scherf (4th, 18-07.5) in the boys long jump;

Katherine Tenemaza (3rd, 77-01.5) and Milana Jaffin (7th, 70-08.5) in the girls discus and Scherf (4th, 111-07.5), Mitch Leggo (6th,100-10) and Chris Ciarlo (7th, 97-01) in the boys discus;

Bauer (3rd, 5-10) in the boys high jump and Faull (3rd, 4-8) in the girls high jump;

Barbino (3rd, 8-feet) in the girls pole vault.
