WOODBURY – Fifth-graders at Mitchell Elementary School had a ball on Friday afternoon when they took on the school’s faculty and staff in the annual fifth-grade basketball game.
But it was more than just a basketball game for the fifth-graders. It was also an opportunity for fifth-graders to be announcers, scorekeepers, distribute snacks, sing The Star-Spangled Banner, and even perform in a halftime show.
The event also helped raise funds for the Woodbury Scholarship Fund to benefit Nonnewaug High School students. The funds were raised via a Penny War, in which the three teachers whose buckets contained the most pennies got a whipped cream pie to the face. Students also held a raffle for “courtside seats” on a sofa with two friends.
As for the game: The students (assisted by sixth-man Henry Koziol, Mitchell’s phys-ed teacher) defeated the teachers 28-24.
