6th Grade Basketball Holds Off Wamogo

Woodbury 6th-grader Brayden Altieri falls over a Wamogo player during Woodbury’s 35-29 win on Sunday, Feb. 4.

WOODBURY – The Woodbury 6th Grade boys basketball team stormed off to a huge lead, and then held on to defeat visiting Wamogo 35-29 on Sunday.

Woodbury built a 16-2 first quarter lead with a strong defensive effort and transition game. Eight of those points came off steals and fast breaks. But then, Woodbury took its full-court press off of Wamogo.

“We felt we could let Wamogo move the ball around a little bit,” Woodbury head coach Daren Altieri said. “In the end, everybody came together, and we had a solid finish.”

Brayden Altieri and Ben Roden had 10 points each to lead the Woodbury scoring.

Daren Altieri said Woodbury did a really good job with inbounding, and that his players knew where they were supposed to be. As a result, that developed openings in the floor, which created open shots.

“Our basketball IQ has got pretty good, Altieri said. “It’s a work in progress. The kids are trying their best, but we’ve got to keep practicing, because if you’re not sure where you need to be on the court, the plays are not going to work.”
