Big Night for Nonnewaug’s Basketball Teams

Tuesday was a big night on the hardwood for the Nonnewaug boys and girls basketball teams. The results for both Chiefs teams mean their respective next games will be their biggest games of the season.

The Nonnewaug girls defeated Housatonic Regional 47-40 to advance to to the Berkshire League championship game. Nonnewaug will play Northwestern at Thomaston on Friday night.

Jen Charette had a team-high 13 points in the win. Tori Maclean had 11 points, and Mary Bibbey had 10.

Northwestern, the tournament’s top seed, finished its regular season with a 19-1 record. Its only loss came to Nonnewaug, 43-33, on Feb. 6.

Meanwhile, the Nonnewaug boys defeated Housatonic 78-55 to win its seventh game of the season.

If the Chiefs win its regular season finale at home on Thursday night against 10-9 Litchfield, they will qualify for the CIAC Division IV tournament. A loss means Nonnewaug will only qualify for the Berkshire League tournament, where it is currently the seventh seed.

Nonnewaug opened its season with seven consecutive losses. The Chiefs have won five of its last seven games, including a Jan. 30 forfeit over Gilbert.
