WOODBURY – Maison St. Germain, a Middle Quarter Mall shop that sells “vintage style with eclectic flair,” has decided to close its storefront after 10 years in business.
But this is not a case of Amazon and the Big Box stores putting a mom-and-pops out of business. Rather, Germain and Perez are making a change in Maison St. Germain’s business model.
“We will still be furniture painting, home restyling, and we’ll still be going to market and can look for things that our customers want,” Perez said. “And we’re still doing event consulting.”
Perez said to grow its business, she and Germain will have to close the storefront. Perez said she and Germain, who is her mom, want to re-focus their energy on a new venture.
A store-closing sale has already begun, with select items 30% to 50% off. Germain said new merchandise is being added from its storage facility daily.
Maison St. Germain’s lease ends on September 2, and Perez said the store should remain open until then.
“I think the store proved we love what we do,” Germain said. “We love all the friends we made through our shop, and we’ve loved how many of them would just stop by to chat and have a cup of coffee. We can still hang out and have coffee together, it will just be somewhere else.”
Part of Maison St. Germain’s new business strategy is the launch of a magazine. Perez said that magazine, which they will test as a digital format, will convey the message of their business in a magazine form. The subject area will be about 80% home decor, 10% fashion, 5% garden, and 5% pets.
Perez said the magazine will be just like the store: fun, colorful, creative, and inspirational.
“We will have people’s homes and businesses in the magazine,” Perez said. “We will be all about promoting creativity and inspiration.”
The other things Maison St. Germain plans to do is get into the merchandising and wholesale business with its Vintage Vixen clothing line and wants to continue helping local businesses with in-store events.
“We still want to give back to the community and be as big of a part as we were with our store,” Perez said. We still want to help other businesses, and hosts events with other stores.”
Maison St. Germain was born as an online business selling vintage items back in 2008. By 2011, co-owners Debra Germain and Nicole Germain Perez abandoned their online venture and opened a 630 sq.-ft. storefront on Main St. North.
Later that year, Maison St. Germain moved to a 1,200-sq.-ft. store in Middle Quarter. And in November 2015, it moved next door to a space nearly three-times the size (3,300 sq.-ft.).
