WOODBURY – Region 14 students, parents, and guardians are about midway through their summer vacation, but its Interim Superintendent had her first day of school on Wednesday.
Christine Syriac has already been meeting with central office staff and regional media members, and sent a getting-to-know-you letter to Region 14 parents and guardians on Thursday.
Though Syriac has the interim label attached to her job title, she felt it was important to let the Region 14 community know more about her work history, and her goals for moving the school district forward.
In the letter, Syriac wrote that her intention is to act as a bridge to keep the positive work in the arena of student learning, curriculum, and instruction moving forward. She said that it is her intention during this time of transition to uphold and continue the district mission of being a “community dedicated to ensuring an engaging and positive learning environment where every student becomes a respected contributing member of society who graduates prepared to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world.”
As the leader of the school district, Syriac said she is accountable to make certain that the administrative team and staff have the resources and skills necessary to successfully foster a climate that nurtures constant growth and achievement.
“I look forward to working together over the next several months and together we can accomplish great things,” Syriac wrote. “I realize that the excellence of Region 14 is the product of a strong partnership between the school system and the entire community, and I will do everything I can to maintain and strengthen that relationship.”
Syriac retired in June 2017 with more than 30 years of experience in education. The last 13 years of her career were with the Seymour Public Schools, and She was the Superintendent of Schools for the last five of those years.
The Board of Education has begun its search for a new Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Anna Cutaia served as Superintendent of Schools since 2014, and started her new job Wednesday as Superintendent of Schools in Milford.
