CIAC Tournament: Busy Tuesday On Tap For Nonnewaug Athletics

WOODBURY – This is it. It’s do or die Tuesday for several Nonnewaug High School teams and athletes as they compete in their respective CIAC tournaments.

The Chiefs baseball and softball teams both travel to Winsted to face Northwest Regional in CIAC Class M openers.

The Chiefs baseball team beat Northwestern 3-2 on an opening day walk-off hit by Sam Williams, and fell to the Highlanders 8-2 on May 5.

The 32nd-seed softball team, which beat Career 13-2 in a qualifying game Saturday, faces a top-ranked and undefeated Highlanders team. Northwestern defeated Nonnewaug on opening day 10-2, and again on May 23 15-0. That snapped the Chiefs’ 5-game winning streak, which propelled them to the Class M tournament.

Three members of the Nonnewaug boys tennis team will continue their quest for CIAC Class S titles. In doubles, fourth-seed Jackson Baker and Dan Swanson take on unseeded Chris Nuzzo and John Murray with a trip to the quarterfinals on the line. In singles, fifth-seed Andrew Ray takes on 12-seed Miles Chapman of Litchfield for a chance at the quarterfinal round.

Several members of the Nonnewaug boys and girls track and field teams will compete today in the CIAC Class M championship meet, which will be held at Willow Brook Park in New Britain. The top 5 finishers in each event and those who reached qualifying times, distances, and heights will go on to the CIAC State Open on Monday, June 4.

The girls tennis team fell 4-3 to Brookfield on Saturday in the CIAC Class M tournament qualifying round. The Chiefs finished its season with a 14-7 record.
