We’ve been used to seeing Nonnewaug senior long distance runner Eddie Nicholas win big races during the 2018-19 school year.
What we haven’t seen is Nicholas face some stiff competition.
Nicholas held off a pair of sophomore runners to win the CIAC Class M 3200 outdoor track championship this week with a time of 9:36.37. Runner-up Nicholas Bendtsen of Wolcott and third-place finisher Jacob Gerow of Tolland crossed the finish line less than a second after Nicholas.
Overall, the boys team finished 18th out of 30 and the girls were 13th out of 32 in the Class M championships, which were held at Willow Brook Park in New Britain.
In the girls meet, Azria Malloy finished third in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.73 seconds. Malloy also threw the javelin 105-feet 10-inches to finish fourth in that event.
Courtney Rowland cleared 5-feet in the high jump to place fourth, and Samantha Thompson clearned 9-feet to place fourth in the pole vault.
In the boys meet, Ryan Monteiro finished fourth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.6.
