Elias Field Wins CIAC 2,000 Meter Steeplechase Title

MANCHESTER – Nonnewaug senior distance runner Elias Field is the 2018 CIAC boys 2,000 meter steeplechase champion.

Field, who will run at Central Connecticut State University in the fall, won with a time of 6:34.97. Field won the second heat by 16.76 seconds. He edged second-place runner Sean McMaster of Coginchaug, who ran in the first heat, by 1.19 second.

Matthew Nyklicek of Avon won the fourth and final heat, but was 4 seconds slower than Field.

Nonnewaug freshman Greg Bastek finished 26th in the 67-runner field with a time of 7:14.38.

In the boys 3,000 meter steeplechase, Nonnewaug junior Eddie Nicholas finished second in 9:55.46. Nicholas finished 6.7 seconds behind the winner, junior Shane Henderson of Old Saybrook. Last year, Nicholas finished 15th with a time of 10:41.60.

On Tuesday, in the girls 2,000 meter steeplechase, Nonnewaug senior Mary Bibbey finished second with a time of 7:28.21. Bibbey, who won the event as a freshman, sophomore, and junior, will continue her running career this fall at Brown University.
