WOODBURY – The Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department’s annual fishing derby for children aged 13 and under is scheduled Saturday morning May 11 from 8 a.m. to noon.

The Mel Snyder Memorial Event, named in honor of a deceased fire chief, takes place on Kings Pond, Rail Tree Hill Road. Although free, donations are cheerfully accepted to help defray the cost of coffee, donuts, and related expenses.

“The department raffle prizes will include a bicycle, fishing poles, and other fishing gear donated by local businesses,” says Firefighter Jason Hatstat of the WVFD’s Hotchkissville Company, in charge of the event. “Last year’s big catch was by Bryce Gilbert. She caught the one large golden trout in the well-stocked pond and was very happy about it.”

Special awards are made for good sportsmanship in honor of the late Darlene Start as well as for the most motivated youngster. Derek Buonocore won the motivation trophy last year while Isabella Scala took home the Start award.
