Gilbert Tops Nonnewaug Wrestling 52-27

Nonnewaug wrestler Steve Grudzien pins Gilbert opponent Kevin Sullivan during a match on January 10, 2017.

WOODBURY – The Nonnewaug wrestling team lost to Gilbert 52-27 on Wednesday night.

“That’s a very good team,” said Nonnewaug head coach Dave Green. “I think we would need to be in a better position on certain matches if we wanted to get the most out of the match.”

Ben Niez-Charest (128) pinned his opponent in 45 seconds, and Steve Grudzien (182) pinned his opponent in 2:27. Flori Cenkolli (170) defeated his opponent 6-5 to pick up the only other non-forfeit win.

Green said his team is a little behind schedule base on where he’s like his team to be at this point in the season. But Green added that it’s explainable, since the Chiefs have had to deal with a lot of weather delays and cancellations, and that a lot of teams are in the same boat.

“Our goal now is to be better by the end,” Green said. “We have to continue to work on different techniques, so that’s what we’re going to do.”
