WOODBURY – Not only did Jake Cenatiempo won the first-ever Woodbury Baseball & Softball 5k XC Run, and made it look like child’s play.
Cenatiempo, who is just 9 years old, ran the fastest time out of all 103 runners, and finished the race at Hollow Park in 20:36.07.
As young as Cenatiempo may be, his preparation was well beyond his age. Cenatiempo went to Hollow Park on Saturday to scout out the course, which helped him dominate the inaugural field.
Cenatiempo, a fourth-grader at Mitchell Elementary School, said he began running when he was seven years old, partially because his mom is a runner.
“My mom is a pretty good runner,” Cenatiempo said. “So is my dad. But I have been beating them.”
Cenatiempo beat second-place finisher James Crocker, of Woodbury, by 38 seconds.
Another 9-year-old from Woodbury, Bethlehem Elementary School student Brady Herman, finished third with a time of 22:31.73. Herman finished a half a second ahead of Steven Leslie of Brookfield, who helped pace Herman through the race.
Victor Lopez, 16, of Woodbury rounded out the Top 5 with a time of 23:55.03.
The first female runner to finish was Crystal Horick of Oxford, who ran a 24:44.19. 10-year-old Sophie Vaughn of New Milford was the second female to finish, and ran a 24:44.91.
Fun-runs of a quarter mile and a half mile were run before the 5k. Photos from the 5k and the fun run are below. 5k race results can be found at FastTrackTiming.com.
