Nonnewaug High School junior Jillian Roden won the Silver Medal in the Sixth District American Legion Oratorical contest on Saturday.

The event, which is in its 80th year, is a speech contest for High School students, and is focused on the U.S. Constitution. Contestants are required to deliver a 10-minute speech on some aspect of the Constitution, as well as give a 5 minute, extemporaneous address on a topic that is assigned to them at the contest.

The contest emphasizes the American Legion’s role in promoting good citizenship and patriotism.

“We are very proud of our contestants, and especially our winners, at this very important event, which showcases our best high school students,” said Sixth District Commander George Castle.
