WOODBURY – And the November ballots are set. Woodbury’s Registrars of Voters held its state-mandated lottery today to determine where two or more candidates from the same party for a particular office will appear on the ballot for 2017 the municipal elections.

Woodbury has six pairs of Republicans running for the same office. There was no lottery needed for Democrats or for petitioning candidates.

The State of Connecticut mandates the lottery to ensure candidates aren’t just listed in alphabetical order, as the candidate at the top of the ticket can have a perceived unfair advantage.

“Some people just go in and they vote for the first one,” said Republican Registrar of Voters Judy Henderson. “They don’t look.”

“Every time they run, it’s just not fair that [the candidate who is last in alphabetical order] gets stuck at the bottom,” added Democratic Registrar of Voters Anne Schwaikert.

As major as the event may have seemed to be in the democratic process, the event was very low key. It was attended by Henderson, Schweikert, one witness, and one member of the press.

Here is the list of candidates for the 2017 municipal election, and how their names will appear on the ballot.
