WOODBURY – For the second time in two games, the Nonnewaug boys soccer team fell 3-1. The loss Tuesday to Thomaston, however, hurt Chiefs head coach Toby Denman more than the same-score loss last Thursday to Lewis Mills.

“I thought we played pretty well [against Lewis Mills], and got beat by someone who played better than we did,” Denman said. “[Tuesday] we got beat by a team that outcompeted us for 80 minutes.”

Denman said he felt his team did not play well, and looked disinterested.

“That was the first time I can say that in a long time with this program,” Denman said.

Trailing 3-0 at the 72-minute mark, Joshua Cheatham scored off a pass from Daniel Swanson to put Nonnewaug on the board.

Connor Hanggi had five saves for the Chiefs.

The loss dropped Nonnewaug’s record to 6-3-1. After the game, Denman talked with his team about how to right the ship.

“I told them I’m hoping this isn’t indicative of where the program is heading,” Denman said. “I don’t expect us to get outcompeted again. We might get outplayed again, but I don’t expect us to get outcompeted.”
