The Nonnewaug High School Drama Club is presenting “Into the Woods”, April 5th at 7pm, April 6th at 2 & 7pm and April 7th at 2pm at the Woodbury Middle School gymnasium. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and are available at the door.

Into the Woods is a Tony-winning musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, about wishes and what can happen when they come true. Based on fairytales by the Brothers Grimm, it brings together the story of a Baker (Michael Garvey) and his Wife (Mary Lasley) who wish for a child, of Cinderella (Rebecca Reimold) who wishes to go to the King’s Festival, of Jack (Kai Spencer) who wishes to keep his best friend, of a Witch (Malia Piscitelli) who wishes to be beautiful again and many more. It all comes together in the woods, where everyone will have to consider if they truly want what they thought they wished for.

Stephen Sondheim never fails to turn a story into a more powerful journey for audiences of all backgrounds. “He has written a beautiful, lush, funny, deep and thoughtful musical. These are stories we all know and love told in a fresh and surprising way. There are resonances for all ages to enjoy, so it’s an especially great show for families to share.”

“The chance for these students to work on Sondheim offers such a great challenge. The characters are colorful and specific. The story is told so completely through both the words and music. The show lives in a place between fantastical and the real, between a child’s wishes and an adult’s experience. It’s a world to which young performers can give an authentic voice and a journey in which they can find a distinct and moving truth.”

Into the Woods is directed and by Shannon-Courtney Denihan with Music Direction by Todd Gorski and set direction by Leeza Disjardin. The choreography was done by sophomore Allison Roche who also plays Lucinda.
