Nonnewaug Football Gets a Senior Day Win

Captains Jarrett Michaels (left) and Justin Southard, the two lone senior football players on the Nonnewaug football team, were winners in their last home football game Friday.

WOODBURY – The Nonnewaug football team sent captains Jarrett Michaels and Justin Southard out in style on Friday with a 28-0 win Friday over Oxford, which was the last home game of their careers.

Southard, a linebacker and running back, got Nonnewaug on the board with a 3-yard touchdown run. He finished the game with 19 yards rushing and three tackles.

Michaels, the quarterback, was 6-for-10 passing for 86 yards and a touchdown, and also ran for 58 yards and a touchdown.

Michaels hit freshman Colby Leonard for a 30 yard touchdown.

CJ Fairbairn led the defense with eight tackles and returned an interception for a touchdown. Thomas Verdiglione had a sack for the Chiefs.

Nonnewaug, which is playing a sub-varsity schedule this season, is now 4-0 and faces Ludlowe in Fairfield on Saturday.
