WOODBURY – There will be a break in tradition in 2019, as ongoing construction at Nonnewaug High School will force graduation ceremonies to be held at an out-of-town venue.
Region 14 announced that the graduation ceremonies for Nonnewaug High School’s Class of 2019 will be held at historing Warner Theater in Torrington. The date has not been determined since the end of the school year is dictated in part by snow days.
Warner Theater does host high school graduations for other schools in the area and has an excellent reputation for the quality of the events they’ve hosted, Region 14 said on its website. Additionally, this option will save the district a significant amount of money, the school district said.
Traditionally, Nonnewaug High School graduation has been held outdoors at the bus loop outside the main entrance of the building. Rain forced the Class of 2018 graduation to be moved to the gymnasium, with overflow seating in the auditorium.
Warner Theater is 32 minutes away from Nonnewaug High School, according to Google Maps. Built by Warner Brothers Studios and opened in 1931 as a movie palace, the venue seats about 1,700 people. Today it operates as a mixed-use performing arts center, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
