WOODBURY – The Nonnewaug volleyball team is no longer undefeated after losing 3-1 Tuesday to Pomperaug.
Nonewaug, which lost 29-27, 14-25, 25-17, 25-20, falls to 10-1, but is still undefeated in the Berkshire League. Pomperaug raised its overall record to 8-3.
“I think at a couple of points in the match, our girls got down on themselves a little bit,” Nonnewaug head coach Martin Malaspina said. “We were able to battle back, but it didn’t fall into place today.”
Nonnewaug got off to a good start, and led Pomperaug 20-15 in the first set. However, the Panthers stormed back to win the first match.
The Chiefs took a 12-5 lead in the third set before Pomperaug called a time out and then rallied for 10 straight points.
Malaspina said the loss did come at a good time for the Chiefs, however, since it gives the team a taste of what losing is like now, and should make them even hungrier in the post season.
“Could we have beaten that team? Absolutely,” Malaspina said. “But it’s an out of league match that really doesn’t affect our title chances, so it’s a good one to lose.”
Malaspina was also happy to see how his team reacted to losing.
“It’s good to see nobody crying or anything like that,” Malaspina said. “I talked about how we’re just going to use the film we have from this one to prepare for Lewis Mills.”
Alexa Spain had 15 kills, 2 blocks and 1 dig for Nonnewaug. Skylar Delp had 12 digs, 31 assists and 4 aces, and Alexis Delia had 11 kills, 2 aces and 2 blocks.
Nonnewaug hosts 8-4 Lewis Mills next Tuesday, and had to come from behind to defeat them 3-2 earlier this season.
