Nonnewaug Wins 3 of 4 CIAC Tournament Games on Wednesday


WOODBURY – Nonnewaug High School hosted four CIAC Tournament games on Wednesday, and the Chiefs were victorious in three of them.

The day started with a noon start for the boys soccer team, followed by simultaneous games by the girls soccer and field hockey games at 2 p.m. At 6 p.m., the volleyball team took center court in the gym.

Here is a roundup of all four games:

Boys Soccer: Haddam-Killingworth 4, Nonnewaug 0. Leo Scherf and Nick Sordi combined to make 6 saves. Nonnewaug was eliminated from the CIAC Class M tournament.

Girls Soccer: Nonnewaug 3, Sheehan 0. Azria Malloy and Cassandra Barbino both had a goal and an assist for the Chiefs. Ella Lupo scored a goal and Sarah Sandor had an assist. Nicole Mercer had 12 saves. Nonnewaug, the 13 seed in the Class M tournament, travels to Clinton to face 5-seed Morgan in a quarterfinal game on Friday.

Field Hockey: Nonnewaug 2, Waterford 0. Lindsey Ross scored off a corner shot, and Ava Cawley scored the other goal off a deflection. Goalie Adrianna Gottmeier had 6 saves. The Chiefs host Canton in a CIAC Class S quarterfinal game at 2 p.m. today.

Volleyball: Nonnewaug 3, Plainfield 0. Third-seed Nonnewaug won 26-24, 25-22, 25-16. Sarah MacLean had 23 assists, 1 ace, 3 kills, and 3 digs. Abby Schurich had 8 kills, 1 ace, 5 digs, and 1 block. Ally Codianna had 3 aces, 8 kills, 4 digs, and 1 block. The Chiefs host Jonathan Law in a CIAC Class M quarterfinal match on Friday.
