Nonnewaug Wins Big At Connecticut Student Film Festival

WOODBURY – Students from the Nonnewaug High School Video Production Program took home several awards including “Best Picture” at the 2017 Connecticut Student Film Festival held at the Toyota Oakdale Theater on May 19.

Students Ben Haggard, Joe Wall, Dean Jones, Michael Classy, Brian Viveros, and Peter Lucera won 4 awards for their films: Best Picture and Best Screen Play for “Level Up” and for “Risky Business” the group was awarded the coveted Audience Choice Award and Parents Choice Award.

Best Animation

Additionally, Michael Auriana and Alex Gonzales won the Best Animation category challenge for their short film “Save our Seas.”

Also known as Expo Fest, the Connecticut Student Film Festival lets students showcase their innovative, cross-curricular products, services, community actions, digital media, and film programs. The Red Carpet Event is the ultimate experience for their hard work and innovation throughout the year.

ExpoFest hosts more than 2,000 students – 70 teams from middle and high schools across the state – who compete in various categories and challenges.

In April, Nonnewaug video arts teacher Will Michael and student directors Emily Alegi, Jake Sumple and Brian Veveros were featured in an interview segment on WTNH’s talk show CT Style.
