Nonnewaug Wrestler Wins CIAC Class S Championship

WILLIMANTIC – Nonnewaug junior wrestler Jack Cronin won the CIAC Class S tournament championship Saturday in the 182 lb. weight class.

Cronin pinned number-2 seeded Stephen Sims of Griswold at the 2:18 mark of the championship match.

To reach the finals, Cronin pinned Ken Sheehan-Heon of Montville in the quarterfinal match and pinned Kaleb Korona of Plainville in the semifinal match.

Cronin was the top seed in the 182 lb. weight class, and received a first-round bye.

Four other Chiefs had Top 6 finishes to help Nonnewaug place 8th with 109 points.

In the 120 lb. finals, Thomas Verdiglione of Nonnewaug was pinned by Kevin Fantoli of Windham. Colden Williamson lost a 2-0 decision to Dominic Pedrolini to take 6th place in the 126 lb. bracket.

Nonnewaug’s Ben Niez-Charest was pinned by Christopher Rivera in the 145 lb. consolation match and finished 4th. Flori Cenkoli fell 7-1 to Nate Tardif East of East Windsor in the 170 lb. consolation match to finish 4th.

Cronin, Verdiglione, Williamson, Niez-Charest, and Cenkoli all qualified for the CIAC State Open meet, which will be held Feb. 22 and 23 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.
