WOODBURY – The Nonnewaug wrestling team is heading to Windham High School tonight and tomorrow with hopes of returning home as the CIAC Class S Champions.

And even if the Chiefs don’t win it all, head coach David Green will be happy if his wrestlers show continued improvement.

“The Class S Tournament is going to be very competitive,” Green said. “We’re training to be our best, and the kids are responding well at practice and competition, and we’re hoping we have a great weekend.”

Nonnewaug will have a wrestler in every weight class but 103 lb. and 285 lb. Junior Flori Cenkolli is seeded second in the 170 lb. weight class, and senior Steve Grudzien is the fourth seed at 182.

The Chiefs enter the tournament after a very strong showing in the Berkshire Valley Tournament. Freshman Thomas Verdiglione won the 113 lb. weight class, and Cenkolli won at 170.

Four Nonnewaug wrestlers – Sophomore Justin Noel (138), sophomore Jack Cronin (160), Grudzien (182), and senior Eli Mills Nanthan (195) – were runners-up in their weight classes.

“The nice thing is about a month ago, we really started working with the wrestlers on certain things, and they responded,” Green said. “I think on Saturday they saw the fruits of all that work. There were kids that didn’t even make it to the finals that wrestled beautifully.”
