Spartans Struggle but Remain Competitive

The Spartans co-op hockey team (Shepaug, Litchfield, Nonnewaug, Thomaston) continues to struggle getting wins but is competitive in each game. Recent losses to the co-op from Bethel-Brookfield-Danbury (BBD) and Foran-Johnathan Law (Milford) shows the range of play that can be produced on any given day.

The game vs BBD on January 14 was our best yet. Though they lost 1-4, they played 3 full periods and outplayed them in all zones of the ice. The lone Spartan goal was a very pretty power play goal scored by Nonnewaug senior captain Colby Fowler off an assist by Shepaug sophomore Cazden Brenner.

The game last night vs Milford showed its best and its worst. The Spartans controlled play in the first period out shooting them 12-5 and outscoring them 2-1, scoring the second with just 4 seconds to go in the period. Similar play in the second with 2 nice power play goals, one by Shepaug senior Tucker Redstone and the other by Nonnewuag Senior captain Tyler Wagner left the score with the Spartans leading 4-2 going into the 3rd period. That is where the strong play ended.

Several penalties and complacent play allowed Milford back into the game with 3 power play goals. The Spartans then started to press and allowed too many odd-man rushes. In the end, Milford outscored the Spartans 6-1 in the third period, with the Spartans’ goal coming from by Nonnewaug Junior Patrick Boylan, and the final was 8-5.

“A disappointing loss, to say the least,” said Spartans coach Michael Gorra. “We need to learn how to play with the lead.”

Shepaug lost 9-1 to Lyman Hall on Friday, and to Mt. Everett 4-1 on Saturday.
