The Spartans co-op ice hockey team won back-to-back road games over the weekend to put itself into contention for a CIAC playoff berth.
The Spartans (Shepaug, Nonnewaug, Litchfield, and Thomaston) defeated Pawling on Friday and Joel Barlow/Weston/Abbot Tech (JBWA) on Saturday, both by 6-4 scores.
On Friday, the Spartans went into the 3rd period down 3-4 and scored 3 unanswered goals to win 6-4. Colby Fowler had 3 goals and 2 assists, Caz Brenner had 2goals, Tucker Redstone had 1 goal and 1 assist and Coleby Bunnell had 2 assists.
Nonnewaug sophomore goalie Jewel Austin notched her first win in net, making 34 saves.
On JBWA’s senior night, the Spartans overcame a 2-4 3rd period deficit to score 4 unanswered goals and win 6-4. In the 3rd period the Spartans fought off over 3:30 of a 2-man down situation. Not only that, the game winner was scored on a 2 on 0 during that 2-man JBWA advantage.
Fowler continued his scoring ways with 1 goal and 2 assists while Brenner and Tyler Wagner each had 2 goals and 1 assist and Redstone had 1 goal and 1 assist. Alex Thornberg made 43 saves in the win.
The Spartans need one win or one tie to qualify for the postseason. The Spartans lost to Wilton 4-2 on Monday and plays New Milford at Canterbury on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and hosts Newington at 8 p.m. at Gunnery on Saturday.
