WOODBURY – Residents may have been shocked to see a 5-ton 6X6 truck (a 1986 American General M923A1, to be exact) parked on Main St. near the corner of Sycamore Ave. of Friday morning.
But the truck – and the attached yellow banner used to promote the U.S. Military History Timeline – is certainly an attention-grabber, which is what event organizer Ray Manzi was hoping for.
And of course, it raises the question – what IS the U.S. Military History Timeline?
Presented by the 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery Regiment, the U.S. Military History Timeline will have a little bit of everything for history and military buffs alike. It will take place at Hollow Park on Aug. 5 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
Featuring reenactors, living historians and veterans, Manzi said the timeline will cover everything from the American Revolution to the War in Afghanistan.
Starting with World War II, Manzi is hoping to include veterans who can help share their stories as part of the timeline. He is also inviting active duty and reservists and veterans of the Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan wars to participate in the event.
“It will go in a line that kind of makes sense,” Manzi said. “Where we don’t have vets and reenactments, there will be signage.”
In addition to the timeline, there will be demonstrations, marching drills, firing squads, and reenactments by American Revolution and Civil War groups. There will also be displays of military memorabilia and vehicles.
“There’s going to be something that would be of interest to everyone,” Manzi said. “From anyone who likes history, to kids who like to climb on Army trucks, to the veterans who want to share their stories.”
This is the first time the 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery Regiment has hosted an event like this. Pervisouly, every other year, they had hosted a reenactment weekend at Hollow Park. But the event had become very labor intensive. The 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery Regiment had also partnered with the Western Connecticut Visitors Bureau, which is now defunct.
While the 2nd Connecticut Heavy Artillery Regiment is the host of the event, they are inviting other groups, such as local American Legion and VFW posts, to participate.
2nd Connecticut is hosting it. We are the organizers. Other groups will be involved. Our local American Legion Post is participating and we have let other VF posts know.
