WOODBURY – The Woodbury Middle School girls cross country team won its meet against Swift and Wamogo on Thursday, while the boys team finished second to Swift and topped Wamogo.

WMS girls runners took second through fifth place in the meet, while the first seven boys who finished the 2-mile course were from Swift.

“Our girls ran a great race and we had a lot of personal bests,” WMS cross country coach Amy Pantaleo said.  “Swift had a huge team, and they won the meet, but our boys had a great race.”

Sarah Stahl finished the girls’ race second in 14:26. Annie Woodward was third with a 14:53 time, Marissa Stahl was fourth with a time of 15:21, and Sydney Groegan was fifth with a time of 15:38.

Carley Shook (8th), Emily Crawford (12th), Isabel Stahl (16th), Claire S (17th), Meryl H (19th), Rebecca V (20th), and Lara B (21st) finished in the Top 25 for WMS.

The WMS boys who finished in the Top 30 were Xavier Scibek (8th), Trey Medonis (9th), James Malkin (10th), Jack Rubacha (14th), Ben Roden (19th), Garret Girgasky (25th), Joey Pelletier (26th), Ryan Shugrue (27th), and Spencer Pasquariello (28th).

Pantaleo said her teams are mixed with runners who have been running for a long time and have been keeping up with it, and others who are just starting out.

“The biggest thing they are working on is keeping their pace, especially for the distance,” Pantaleo said. “A lot of them, especially if they have just started running, aren’t used to distances.”
