OXFORD – The Woodbury Panthers came from behind and then held on to defeat the Oxford Falcons in the Oxford NFL Flag Football League Division 1 championship game 20-19 on Sunday.
The Panthers trailed 13-0 at halftime. Deep in Panthers territory, the Falcons appeared ready to put the game out of reach, but a pass intended for an Oxford receiver was picked off at the goal line by Noah Elsemore and returned the entire length of the field for a touchdown. Owen Miller then hit Elsemore for the extra point and cut the Falcons’ lead to 13-7.
On the very next play, Woodbury’s P.J. Galullo ran a quarterback bootleg and broke free from the Falcons defense for a game-tying touchdown.
With less than one minute left to play, Adam Hart ran, juked, and weaved his way through the entire Falcons defense for the go-ahead touchdown. He then caught the ensuing extra point pass from Noah Elsemore to give the Panthers a 20-13 lead.
But two plays later, as the clock struck zero, the Falcons scored to make it a 20-19 game. The Falcons chose to go for the two-point conversion and a chance to win the game, but the Falcons’ pass sailed out of the end zone.
The Panthers were the top seed in the Division 1 playoffs, having finished the regular season with a 4-1-1 record. Woodbury rallied from a 7-0 halftime deficit in its playoff game last Sunday to defeat the Chargers 26-7.
